Chapter 16

Hollis

Killian was surprisingly subdued after he fed me from his wrist. Walking me up the stairs like a gentleman and leaving me at my door. I was tempted to invite him in, but the afternoon had left my mind reeling. I’d connected to my power, even if it was only a faint trickle, but still, it’s there waiting for me to claim it again. It’s just going to take time. I think.

Beyond feeling the familiar earth magic thrumming beneath my fingers, there’s Killian. He continues to surprise and confuse me. He presents this brash, sarcastic exterior, but he exposed his weaknesses tonight, peeling back the armor that encases his perceived flaws and showing me the gritty truth underneath. And dammit if I don’t feel a connection growing between the two of us. His wounded soul calls to mine, like a kindred spirit hoping to grab more from life. We both want better than what we’ve had in the past, and even though Killian’s history is many years behind him, it still felt raw when he spoke of it. I recognize too much of myself when staring into Killian’s midnight eyes.

Before he’d left me in my room, he’d stroked a finger down my cheek. “You need rest, Hollis. You look like death.” He’d raised a brow, and his lips had quirked up in a smile.

Even though his blood made me feel better than I have in days, he was right. I feel like dirt warmed over. Days of puking my guts out, followed by life altering situations that no one should have to deal with, well, it’s no surprise I’m barely able to stand on my two feet.

I’d said goodnight and only managed to kick off my pants and whip my bra off before falling into bed, nearly asleep before my head hit the pillow.

The room is dark when I finally break out of the deep slumber that’s held me under for most of the day. It’s hard to tell what time it is, because the lone window in here has shutters that block out the sun. I have the sense that I’ve been sleeping most of the day though. I don’t necessarily feel rejuvenated, but I feel slightly better than I have over the past few days, and that’s saying something.

Hunger gnaws at my stomach, which does a sick twist when I think about trying to suck down another bag of blood. Ugh. I just can’t do it. For whatever reason, it does not mix with me. Now Killian’s blood, that’s another thing entirely. Merely thinking about pressing my lips to his neck, laving my tongue over his skin, and sinking my fangs in to consume the most mouth-watering, delicious thing I’ve ever tasted, has my body throbbing.

I press my thighs together as if that can stem the path of my thoughts or maybe relieve some of the pressure curling in my belly, but I know it won’t make a damn bit of difference.

“Mmm, penny for your thoughts,” Killian’s voice coos from behind me, and I scream.
